What Is Yoga Nidra?
Yoga Nidra can be thought of as ‘yogic sleep’. Yoga means union and Nidra means sleep. In Yoga Nidra the aim is to join your awareness with the act of sleeping. Externally it may look like you are asleep, but internally you are awake and aware, and you are conscious of the deeper layers of the mind. Through the use of body sensing, breath awareness, and guided imagery, you are systematically guided on a journey through your whole being- “the koshas”. The koshas represent the 5 layers of being. In a nutshell- Layer 1 is our physical body. Layer 2 is our energy body, our life force, or prana. Layer 3 the mental body. Layer 4 a primary one-ness orientation. Layer 5 the bliss body. If you want to know more about the koshas please send some feedback and we can have information in a future blog!
How Can Yoga Nidra Help Me (You)?
Yoga Nidra has health benefits such as reducing stress, tension, anxiety and insomnia. 20 minutes of Yoga Nidra is said to equal 3 hours of deep sleep. The sequencing of the 8 stages is essential to its effectiveness. The stages take the participants on a journey from external awareness to subtle internal perception and back out again.
Yoga Nidra switches off your “flight or fight” response and switches on your “rest and digest” response or as we like to call it-relaxation response-your body’s natural healing state. In this healing state regeneration and revitalization occur naturally. Your body will intuitively know what to do to attain and maintain good health and all you need to do is switch on your own healing. Yoga Nidra is the button that can bring you effortlessly and quickly into a state of relaxation and healing.
It is a meditation practice done from a lying down position allowing for deep relaxation. It’s also one of the easiest relaxation and meditation techniques making it suitable for all levels of experience to join. Allow your world to slow down for an hour and take a break from everyday concerns.
